ERASMUS experience in Finland

07-01-2026

Erasmus gave me my first friend in Finland, another Erasmus student whom I had met at the airport on my way to Lappeenranta, Finland. She is from Slovakia but studying in Denmark. We explored the city by walking, went to classes together, and mingled with other students who were in the same situation as us. Over time, my network of friends increased exponentially; I made friends from Czech Republic, Italy, Finland and Germany amongst many others. It was exciting to be part of such a big international community. With my classes at the university, I was exposed to cultural backgrounds, entirely different from or similar to mine.

But most importantly, I broadened my understanding of different healthcare systems, patient care, and medical protocols in the field of Nursing. I had gained a vast itinerary of information on my host country, other European countries, and countries outside the European Union. I had so much fun while experiencing a different curriculum and teaching method in Finland.

Erasmus enhanced my adaptation skills, team participation, and leadership skills, as well as my studying habits. It encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone, ask questions, meet new people, and make use of online resources I otherwise would not have used if I had not gone on the Erasmus program.

If you ever have doubts about going on an Erasmus program, my advice to you is to swallow those doubts and take the first step. As always, the first steps are difficult, but the rewards are unimaginable. You are not alone; you will meet other students who are doing the same thing as you, and you will overcome difficulties that seemed insurmountable. When you look back, you will realize that what you considered problems might not even be one.

One more thing: if you choose Finland, remember to put out your arm and wave to the bus at the bus stop, unless it would not stop for you.
